Unlike ordinary bikes, electric bikes have battery-powered motors which assist you with your riding. Meanwhile, a digital display allows you to switch between different amounts of motor input as you ride. While you pedal, you can ask the motor to match or double the level of effort, helping to propel you along.
Electric bikes requires you to pedal for the motor to kick in. Furthermore, electric bikes are restricted by law to go no faster than 15.5 mph and with these restrictions, you don’t need a license to ride the bike. Even better, you don’t need to tax or insure an e-bike, like you would a scooter.
Also, it is possible to go faster than this speed on an e-bike, however you will need to pedal harder as the motor assistance will cut out at 15.5mph.
An e-bike is usually heavier than a standard bike. The average weight of a hybrid e-bike can be around 25kg. This is because of the extra components added to the bike, such as the battery, which can be quite large.
This shouldn’t really affect riding experience because of the assisted push by the motor unless you are pedalling the bike manually.
Front hub motors are positioned on the front wheel hub. They’re quite commonly seen on folding bikes and cheaper bikes.
Rear hub motors are suited on the rear wheel hub and feels more natural than front hub power.
Lastly, e-bikes with a mid-engine motor are typically more expensive than the other types. This is because they offer some significant advantages, including better balance and a more natural feel to the bike when riding.
E-bikes can come with different sizes of battery, which typically vary between 250W and 500W. The size of the battery usually determines the range and the assistance level on a bike. For example, a 250W battery’s range will be much lesser than a 500W battery and it won’t be able to give you as much assistance if the road points upwards. Therefore, if you live or ride in hilly areas, it’s worth opting for a higher wattage battery.
Assistance levels= Different bikes have different setups however, most bikes will offer a low, medium and high assistance mode.
Display unit= The display control unit is usually placed on the handlebar and it allows you to adjust the assistance level as you go. Some display units are clearer and easier to use than others.
Frame size= A very common mistake it to buy a bike with a frame that is oversized, or undersized. This can ruin your enjoyment of the bike if you have to reach too far for the handlebar and may make the experience less comfortable. We recommend test riding the bikes before buying one.
Brakes= Due to the increased weights of e-bikes, you need a decent set of brakes. We recommend hydraulic brakes due to their increased stopping power in wet conditions, making them fairly reliable.
